Action For Development
Action For Development (AFD) is an indigenous Ethiopian NGO, founded in 1997 to build on the achievements of the Freedom from Hunger Campaign, a programme operated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. They work primarily in marginalized dry lands in the South of Ethiopia, in particular parts of the Borana zone of the Oromia region, and the Gamo Gofa and Wolayta zones of SNNPR. In these drought-prone areas poverty is widespread and people subsist in fragile environments.
Their vision is of an Ethiopia in which poverty is alleviated, and people lead a dignified life in an enabling social and natural environment. Through their work they attempt to improve the quality of life of pastoral and other marginalised communities, complementing the intitiatives already being undertaken by those communities. In particular, they hope that through their work people can have a more sustainable livelihood, greater food security, and a greater capacity to resist drought and disasters.
In the way they work, AFD promote the empowerment of pastoralists and other marginalised groups, and of the women within those groups, supporting them to claim their legal rights and entitlements.
Generally AFD is involved in various development activities that can make real changes in the lives of the marginalized. Some of the operational components of AFD include; livelihood diversification, capacity building, disaster preparedness and management, modeling social and economic services, promotion of good governance, and working on crosscutting issues like HIV/AIDS and gender.
