Wood gatherer  / « Voriges Foto« Nächstes Foto

Birke Bigo gathers wood in the Antoto area on the hillsides above Addis. She leaves home at 7 am to begin the 2 hour walk up to Antoto. She will stay all day gathering wood which she will sell in the local market. The money she earns will not be enough to cover the price of food for her children. There are NGOs working with the wood gatherers to help find alternative less strenuous work and also discouraging the use of firewood for enviromental reasons. Eucalyptus is not native to Ethiopia but was brought to Addis by foreigners around the time the city was founded. Had it not been for the fast growing eucalyptus providing fast plentiful supplies of firewood Addis Ababa may never have been able to flourish into the city it is today.
